This two day workshop (22nd & 24th) with Philippa Naylor explores in detail a wide range of exciting free-motion machine quilting styles and techniques. The emphasis is on learning new skills, working in a supportive group, in a relaxed but productive environment and is suitable for all levels.
The first day begins with discussions on materials, equipment and working methods. Following demonstrations students will sew a number of samples and start to compile a fabric reference book of ideas including stippling, leaf, flower and clamshell designs.
The afternoon of the first day is devoted to trapunto (stuffed quilting) using an easy method which does not involve cutting the backing fabric. Demonstrations are once again followed by students and more samples are created.
Day two begins with the exploration of free-motion feathers, both traditional and contemporary. Students transfer their designs onto fabric and sew them using techniques learnt on day one.
The final technique to be covered is corded trapunto using soft woollen yarn to create a sculptural design.
